Christmas Movie Magic
Overall Rating: 3 Golden Rings
Worth watching?: Yes, mostly because Drew Seeley is an underrated treasure that should be celebrated.
Chemistry: 6 / 10. I find it hard to believe someone wouldn’t immediately fall in love with Drew Seeley.
Smooch Quality: Meh. It was mostly blocked due to poor camera angles, so hard to tell.
Plot According to Julie: A writer looking to break out of her mundane beat is given the opportunity to write a piece about the 65th anniversary of a classic holiday movie, Christmas With You. Upon arrival in the small town where it was filmed, she starts to uncover clues about a mysterious romance between the star of the movie and a local sweetheart. She joins forces with the local movie theater owner to unravel the town’s secrets, but will they be prepared for what they find?
Review (SPOILERS): The movie was cute and kitschy. There is a spontaneous song and dance number at the end of the movie that was slightly out of context, but I will accept any excuse to hear Drew Seeley serenade me. Also, for a movie made in 2021, they had an opportunity to incorporate LGBT diversity into a fairly homogenous storyline by having the movie star fall in love with a local MAN. This would’ve been an appropriate ode to LGBT stars like Rock Hudson, who were forced to conceal their sexuality at the peak of their Hollywood careers. All in all, would recommend this movie, but would have made some tweaks if I were in the writer’s room.
